Revelstoke Grizzlies defenceman Diego Smith is headed overseas to be a student-athlete.
On March 23, the Ostrava Steel Hawks of the newly created European Union College Hockey League, announced the signing of the Grizzlies blueliner to play next season. The Steel feel they have added size, experience, and physicality with Smith.
Originally from Brandon, Man., Smith developed into a dependable two-way defenceman during his junior career, bringing a combination of physical play, defensive reliability, and growing offensive production.
Over three seasons in Revelstoke, Smith steadily progressed each year, appearing in 114 regular season games and producing 66 points.
“I’m excited to begin the next chapter of my hockey career with the Ostrava Steel Hawks, studying at VSB – Technical University of Ostrava and embracing a new fan base.
“I’m an honest player who isn’t afraid to deliver big hits and do whatever it takes to win,” he continued. “I take pride in playing tight defence that creates offensive opportunities. I’m extremely grateful for my three years in Revelstoke and everything the organization has given me.”
Steel Hawks Director of Hockey Operations Zac Pearson believes Smith’s experience in a winning environment will translate well to the European game.
“Diego is a player you can rely on in every situation. He competes hard and understands the details of defending at a high level. Coming out of a strong program like Revelstoke, he knows what it takes to win and bring consistency every night. We’re excited about what he adds to our group and his potential moving forward in Europe.”
